Tsongon Tsering, a 29-year-old Tibetan environmental defender, has been imprisoned by Chinese authorities for exposing environmental destruction in his local area and speaking out against illegal mining activities causing severe damage to the local Tibetan ecosystem, pollution of nearby waterways, and huge risks to local homes and residents.
Concern about the destruction started in May 2023 when the local community raised concerns with the local authorities about the Chinese company Anhui Xianhe Construction Engineering Company's mining operations along the local river. These pleas for action to stop the mining were ignored.
Tsongon Tsering then took to social media to appeal to China’s top leaders for intervention, to visit the site, investigate the issue, and stop the environmental destruction. But rather than an investigation into the damage being done, Tsongon Tsering himself became a traget.
He is one of many Tibetan environmental defenders who has been targeted by Chinese authorities for exposing China's exploitation of Tibet and its environment.
Sign this petition to urgently call on Foreign Ministers
1) To push China to immediately and unconditionally release Tsongon Tsering and investigate illegal mining in Tibet
2) To publicly support the global call for moratorium until such a time when Tibetans are free to either provide their consent to such projects or refuse consent without fear of arrest and torture.
