A shocking video recently emerged from Tibet showing teenage boys crying on the side of the road following their escape from a Chinese state-run boarding school. They describe it as like a “prison” where they endured an “unbearable” life of beatings and abuse. Another video shows a young boy being violently forced into a car by unidentified men. 

It is presumed the children were taken back to the same boarding schools they escaped from, while the local community is being closely monitored by the authorities. In June 2024, Chinese authorities forced 140 monks and nuns from Muge Monastery school, including the young teens seen in the two videos, to enroll in nearby boarding schools.

These videos are undeniable evidence of abuse in China’s colonial boarding school for Tibetan children. The officials responsible for these forced assimilation policies must be held accountable for their crimes.

Take action and call on global leaders to demand the Chinese government immediately:
1) Provide information on the whereabouts and well-being of the young monks seen in the videos and all students forced to leave Muge Monastery;
2) Provide access to Muge Nine-Year School (Ch: 毛儿盖九年一贯制学校) and Songpan County Grassland Village Relocation School (Ch: 松潘县草原乡易地育人学校 ); and
3) Re-open Muge Monastery School and allow all former staff and students to return.
