Tibetan Buddhism has never faced a greater threat. Every day the Chinese government furthers its destruction of the religion that stands at the heart of Tibet’s unique culture. 

Tibetans have been fighting for the survival of their distinct culture now for over 70 years. 

We uncovered new evidence of China’s plans to control Tibetan Buddhism and specifically target the reincarnation of one of the world’s best-loved spiritual leaders, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. 

The evidence reveals the extent of China’s scheme to control the heart of Tibetan religious identity. And not only target the Tibetan people but also the global community as a means to build more influence, and further reshape and undermine the rights of Tibetans.

This is a critical moment for Tibet and the survival of its distinct culture. We must push back against China’s plot to control Tibetan Buddhist leaders and ensure Tibetan Buddhism remains in the hands of Tibetans. 

World governments must take action to show their support for the 14th Dalai Lama as the legitimate authority on his succession and oppose any effort by China to select and appoint Tibetan Buddhist religious leaders.

• Respect the Tibetan people’s rights to freedom of religion and culture and immediately cease practices that violate these rights;
• Grant immediate, meaningful, and unfettered access to the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief;
• Urge the Chinese authorities to provide proof of the whereabouts and well-being of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, the 11th Panchen Lama of Tibet, and call for an independent monitor to be given immediate access to corroborate his situation and the extent to which he is able to enjoy and exercise his rights.
