Tibetan Buddhism has never faced a greater threat. Every day the Chinese government furthers its destruction of the religion that stands at the heart of Tibet’s unique culture. 

Tibetans have been fighting for the survival of their distinct culture now for over 70 years, and they are being punished for simple everyday acts including sharing information about their spiritual leader, the 14th Dalai Lama.

China is implementing a strategy to control the heart of Tibetan religious identity and specifically target the reincarnation of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.

This is a critical moment for Tibet and the survival of its distinct culture. We must push back against China’s plot to control Tibetan Buddhist leaders and ensure Tibetan Buddhism remains in the hands of Tibetans. 

World governments must take action to show their support for the 14th Dalai Lama as the legitimate authority on his succession and oppose any effort by China to select and appoint Tibetan Buddhist religious leaders.

• Respect the Tibetan people’s rights to freedom of religion and culture and immediately cease practices that violate these rights;
• Grant immediate, meaningful, and unfettered access to the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief;
• Release all Tibetan political prisoners including Jampa Choepel and Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, the 11th Panchen Lama.
