URGENT: Free Tashi Wangchuk

Tashi Wangchuk, an innocent Tibetan shopkeeper and language advocate, was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment by Chinese authorities on false charges of ‘inciting separatism’. HIS CRIME? Publicly seeking his right to Tibetan language education. 

Detained in January 2016 after featuring in a New York Times report about his attempts to lawfully campaign for his rights, Tashi was tortured and the safety of his family was threatened. On 4 January 2018 Tashi was tried on trumped-up politically motivated charges of ‘inciting separatism’; he was later sentenced to five years even though he has committed no crime under international law nor the Chinese constitution. 

Tashi's lawyer has been denied access on multiple occasions, which has halted further plans to appeal the wrongful conviction and five-year sentence.
