Reject China’s “Ethnic Unity Law” - Protect Tibetan Language and Identity

On 1 July 2026, China’s new “Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress” will come into force.

Behind the language of “unity,” this law is designed to forcibly assimilate Tibetans and other peoples into a single state-controlled identity centred on loyalty to the Chinese Communist Party. It builds on China’s colonial boarding school system, where an estimated one million Tibetan children have already been separated from their families and communities.

For Tibetans, this is not simply a policy change. It is an existential threat.

UN experts and the European Parliament have already warned that the law risks entrenching assimilationist policies that violate fundamental human rights, including the rights of children to learn and develop in their own language and culture.

Sign this petition and call on governments and international institutions to publicly condemn China’s “Ethnic Unity Law,” defend Tibetan language rights and demand an end to coercive boarding schools and political indoctrination.
